Understanding Cataract Surgery:
Cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the eye and hence causes a variety of vision disturbances.Cataract could develop at any age. But most often around age 50 years. The vision drop may not be corrected with glasses ,contact lenses or refractive corneal surgery like LASIK.
Cataract may be diagnosed during a routine eyecheck and the treatment may be non surgical or surgical.
Non Surgical treatment of Cataract:
When diagnosed in its early stages, you may have cataract symptoms like blurry /cloudy vision ,poor night vision, increased requirement of light for reading, light sensitivity, frequent change of eyeglass prescription. Based on the level of discomfort your eye doctor would suggest a change of glasses, use of sunglasses or a wide brimmed hat or change in the position of reading lights, etc.
Surgical treatment of cataract:
Cataract surgery is usually proposed by your eye doctor when the non surgical methods do not improve cataract symptoms. The decision is a joint one and is taken when it interferes with your daily routine and lifestyle activities. Cataract surgery is the only means of treating cataract and it is the removal of the natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens (IOL).
Advantages of cataract surgery are many.It removes dependency on glasses, improves contrast sensitivity and colour perception, reduces glare and improves night vision. This also depends on the type of Lens (IOL) used. Monofocal IOLs will correct either distance or near vision. Multifocal IOLs correct distance and near vision both. Toric IOLs correct Astigmatism and could be monofocal or multifocal.
Please note that everyone is not a suitable candidate for the different premium IOLs and an informed decision has to be taken. It also adds to the cost of cataract surgery. The additional cost may not be reimbursed by your insurance company.
A medical fitness is mandatory as a few medications may have to be stopped before surgery.
For those who have already undergone cataract surgery (pseuodophakia) earlier dependency on glasses can be removed by PRESBY LASIK.
