Eye is one of the five important senses we have. With the present day lifestyles and use of technology, the eye is being put through a lot of stress. Just like other parts of our body, our eye health and vision also changes over time, so it’s important to recognize at every stage what is normal and what is not.
The Eye starts losing some of its elasticity as early as age 10. It may not affect the quality of our vision but may start causing eye strain or affect efficiency of focusing. Blurred vision can be caused either by how accurately our eyes focus, or how long they can hold what we are looking at in focus. This usually starts to show up when we finish education and start working and multitasking.
It is usually when we reach middle age that we start to notice changes in our vision, even though we may never have had a need for correction (glasses) in the past. Denial may be our first line of defense, but eventually we will probably accept that we need an eye test!
Vision changes are one of the first ways our body lets us know we’re getting older.
Time and Ageing are synonymous with the human body. Ageing is a multidimensional process as a result of physical, psychological and social changes. In addition to this, there are many diseases known to cause ocular or visual changes. Diabetes, for example, is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in those aged 20–74, with ocular manifestations such as diabetic retinopathy and macular edema affecting up to 80% of those who have had the disease for 15 years or more. Familial and genetic eye diseases may also show up and we have a lot on our hands to track. What we could only probably take charge of is keeping a track on the physical changes, so that they remain within the healthy limits.
Even if we are not experiencing any vision problems, it is still very important at this stage in our lives to have the health of our eyes tested. By doing so we will at least have our baseline tests and results recorded. These would be the reference points for the future. Regular eye examinations and early diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases can help us continue to preserve good vision throughout life.
